Active Ingredients: Diclofenac
Diclofenac is used to reduce any persisting pain, swelling (inflammation) and joint stiffness as seen due to arthritis. As the pain diminishes significantly, it gives an ease to the patients to do normal day-to-day activities. However, in order to treat long term conditions such as arthritis, consult your healthcare provider about non-drug related or other medications based treatment.
This injection can create a variety of side effects that are listed down below-
- Upset stomach
- Abdominal cramps
These symptoms usually go away when the patient’s body adjusts to the medicine. However, if the situation is persistent or worsens, consult a medical expert immediately.
Indications and Usage:
This injection is administered through an intravenous route. It is usually given through a nurse in the hospital and is directly injected through the vein. As a precautionary measure, drink an optimal amount of liquids before the administration of this injection. This will lead to an increase in the discharge of urine thereby preventing any possible kidney problems.
Before initiating a treatment through this drug, ensure that you are not allergic to aspirin or any other NSAIDs like ibuprofen, naproxen, celecoxib or have any other form of allergic reaction in general. As this medication contains certain inactive ingredients which may also cause other problems, inform your pharmacist with your medical history.
Administration and Dosage:
This drug is administered after looking at the patient’s chart containing the severity of the condition, response to the treatment as well as in proportion with other medications under administration. Inform your physician in advance if you are currently taking any products such as prescribed drugs, non prescribed drugs and herbal products. To reduce the cause of concern such as bleeding stomach from Diclofenac, this injection should be given at a minimum effective dosage for a short duration. Patients should not increase the dosage, change the dosage or even stop this injection all together without consulting a doctor. For chronic conditions like arthritis, one should keep taking Diclofenac as prescribed by the healthcare care provider and discuss benefits and risks with them as well.
Some products when they come in contact with Diclofenac can cause adverse reactions. Some of these drugs are listed down below-
- ACE inhibitors like captopril, lisinopril
- Angiotensin II receptor blockers such as valsartan, losartan)
- Corticosteroids such as prednisone
- Water pills (diuretics like furosemide)

If the patient is overdosed through this inkcetion and passes out, has difficulty in breathing, stomach cramps, vomiting in the form of coffee grounds, extreme sleepiness, slow breathing, seizures, etc should visit the nearest hospital immediately.
Diclofenac injections can raise a patient’s blood pressure level. Therefore, daily monitoring of BP levels is a must as long as the injection is prescribed. Inform your physician if you notice high blood pressure levels consistently.
