General Information:
Metronidazole tablets in their form are antibiotics, amebicide and antiprotozoal medication. These drugs belonging to the class of nitroimidazole antibiotic medication are useful in treating infections related to anaerobic bacteria and protozoa. These tablets are recommended in the case of mild to moderate level clostridium difficile infections. Metronidazole medicine works by removing the bacteria and other such microorganisms that lead to infections in the reproductive system, gastrointestinal tract, skin, vagina and other parts of the body. These tablets work against only bacterial infection and not viral infections.
Side Effects:
Any medication can have adverse reactions to it. Similarly, Metronidazole tablets too cause some side effects such as: loss of appetite, diarrhoea, dizziness, metallic taste and difficulty in sleeping. Consult a healthcare expert before initiating the treatment from this medicine.

Indications and Usage:
This medication is prescribed to cure infections from bacteria or parasites. Metronidazole oral tablets are used for treating vaginal infections in women. Sometimes this medication is used along with other drugs for a combination therapy. However, these tablets are not prescribed to those patients who are sensitive to Metronidazole.
Precautions:
Never take Metronidazole medicine if:
- You’ve an allergic reaction to any of its ingredients in Metronidazole.
- You’re in the first three months of pregnancy.
- You’re currently taking busulfan or have taken disulfiram in the last two weeks.
- You consume alcohol or have taken any products that have alcohol in it.
Metronidazole medicine is likely to pass through the breast milk. Therefore, only take this medicine if it is suggested by your doctor who’ll outweigh the benefits against the risk. In terms of driving any motor vehicles, the individual should only do so after knowing the adverse signs of the medicine on the individual’s body. As these tablets can cause dizziness which may worsen in the presence of alcohol so be careful before undertaking any risky activity.
Administration and Dosage:
Consult a medical expert to know the precise dosage of this medication. Never exceed the dosage given in the prescription. The regular dose for adults is 500-750mg to be taken orally by mouth thrice a day. This has to be repeated for a period of seven to ten days. The usual dosage for children under 45kg is 15mg/kg/day and it has to be taken orally for a period of three to seven days.
Interactions:
The following medications such as amprenavir, busulfan, warfarin, coumadin, jantoven, dicumarol and anisinsione come into contact with metronidazole tablets can cause some unwanted symptoms therefore always consult a physician before starting the treatment with this drug.
Overdose:
If a patient gets overdosed through this medicine then they may show signs like loss of balance, numbness and tingling, seizures, difficulty in breathing or even passing out. If any signs as such are seen, please seek medical help urgently.
Adverse Reactions:
Some of the adverse reactions after the consumption of this drug can lead to:
- Severe allergic reactions
- Bloody stools
- Depression
- Increase or decrease in the amount of urine
- Numbness
- Hives
- Red rash
- Wheezing
- Fever
